Normally when testing mobile graphics chips, it’s difficult if not impossible to get the rest of the system components to line up exactly, since every laptop has a lot of custom engineering. But Dell has developed a unique AGP 4X socket for their laptop P-III motherboards that both nVidia and ATI have designed to, meaning that with a little brain salad surgery we were able to swap the two graphics controllers in and out and test on the identical test platform. The underlying reason for this design makes a lot of sense for Dell: by having this pin-out, Dell can, at a moment’s notice, swap from one graphics chip to another without having to re-engineer an entire laptop design. For graphics chipmakers, this isn’t such a great thing, since it means that their chip can be unceremoniously booted out of a given laptop design with barely a sweat broken by Dell. But the upside for graphics chipmakers is that they can easily offer different memory configurations and even variants of the same chip (read: speed bin), any of which can be easily locked and loaded at a customer’s request.
Re: Mobility Radeon 7500 Ya, sure a rad7500 is a good card and all, but its a downgrade from a rad9000 as listed in your systems specs. It might be more wise to go with a nvidia gf4 or another 9000 ( a few of the new-new-new games need them (splinter cell 4-1) but if your cheap and or poor like me go with 7500! ATI Radeon Display Driver 13.5 on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs. This download is licensed as freeware for the Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) operating system on a laptop or desktop PC from drivers without restrictions. ATI Radeon Display Driver 13.5 is available to all software users as a free download for Windows. I have ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 32mb, I know that it doesnt support Aero. I faced the same issue with Vista however it was solved by choosing the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 driver from the windows and it worked fine (without Aero of course) and it supported movies and S-Video and everything.
- There is now, and its name is Mobility Radeon 7500 (MR7500). NVidia, with its first entry into the mobile space, GeForce2Go, put ATI on notice that there was a new shooter in town.
- ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, v.7.72.8-020528m-4179C, A02 Driver for ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics adapter on Dell Inspiron 8100. Get the latest driver Please enter your product details to view the latest driver information for your system.
Here’s the vital statistics for the Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook we used for testing the ATI and nVidia mobile chips:
1.13GHz Pentium-III CPU 256MB PC100 SDRAM Ultra XGA Panel with 1600×1200 resolution 10GB hard-disk EIDE DVD-ROM drive Windows XP DirectX 8.1 |
And for the Intel 830M-based laptop, here are the speeds and feeds for Dell’s Latitude C400:
1.2GHz Pentium-III 256MB PC100 SDRAM 1024×768 Panel 12GB hard-disk External EIDE DVD-ROM drive Windows XP DirectX 8.1 |
While we tried to be as head-to-head as we could, the Mobility Radeon 7500 includes 64MB DDR in the Dell, while the GeForce2Go includes 32MB DDR. The Intel 830M only includes 16MB of RDRAM. You’ll notice a few tests were unable to run on the Intel and Nvidia parts due to memory size limitations.
Our tests included most of the usual suspects, including:
Ziff Davis’ own 3D WinBench 2000 1.1 |
We also used GameGauge (3DGG) 2.5.1, which uses demo loops from seven games, each of which consists of around 5,000 frames of animation, and we disabled v-sync to remove monitor vertical refresh limits. 3D GameGauge 2.5.1 is a suite of seven games, one OpenGL (Quake 3), and six Direct3D (UT, Re-Volt, Expendable, Panzer Elite, NFL Fever and Jane’s USAF).
All tests were run at 1024×768, and all were run at 32-bit color except Panzer Elite, NFL Fever, and Jane’s USAF which were run at 16-bit color. In most cases, we used the driver control panels to disable V-sync. For Quake 3, we ran all settings at 32-bit and used light maps, with texture quality cranked all the way up. In UT we ran with all render options at their highest settings.

We also ran several tests at 1600x1200x32 to put these parts to work, and did two tests with 4X FSAA enabled.
